The eye of the storm won’t get to these parts until Monday morning (EST), but the place is in lockdown. The Subway, closed. The National Guard called in. Irene has said boo, and NY has jumped into action.

The caution is put down to a number of factors. For New York, Hurricanes are as rare as quiet traffic days; the past winter saw a snowstorm that threw the city into chaos thanks to an under prepared administration; and parts of the city is low lying, making it vulnerable to storm surges. The storm hasn’t hit, and until it does, there’s no point thinking about tomorrow.
